This calming neurotransmitter in the central nervous system promotes a sense of tranquility and counteracts the effects of stress and anxiety. Kava Rhizome Extract
“Kava (Piper methysticum) is a perennial shrub native to the South Pacific. Kava extracts have been traditionally prepared as drinks when combining the rhizomes (underground stems) with water to address a number of health issues including stress, irritability and restlessness, muscular spasms and menstrual discomfort.” The true effect of kava is based upon the activity of the kavalactones. Kavalactones create a calming effect, reducing the excitatory neurotransmitter release by increasing the activity of GABA. This, in turn, results in relaxation without losing cognition activity.
Valerian Root Extract
“Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is well-known for its calming and sleep-supporting properties.” Compounds in valerian extract have been found to modify GABA-A receptors, producing a dose-dependent release of GABA. Valerian is able to decrease the enzyme-induced breakdown of GABA in the brain, which reduces stress and agitation without causing negative effects.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) has long been used in herbal remedies for its calming effects, having many flavonoid components that function as active ingredients. Studies have shown a significantly greater sense of calm before a high-stress situation.
Chamomile Flower Extract
“Used as a natural calming remedy for thousands of years, bioactive compounds in chamomile have the ability to bind to GABA receptors, modulate monoamine neurotransmission and also display neuroendocrine effects.” Research shows chamomile inhibits glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity, thus creating a calming effect throughout the body. Placebo studies have shown those who were given chamomile have significantly better scores in mood and body relaxation than those with the placebo.
Hops Strobile Extract
“The hops plant, Humulus lupulus, is a perennial climbing vine that has been used for centuries for its relaxing properties, among other health benefits.” Only the female hops plant is known for medicinal purposes, having the active ingredients of volatile oil, valerianic acid, tannins and flavonoids.
