A great way to use your fall apples for the season is canning apple sauce!
Apple sauce is so easy to can for the winter months & it tastes amazing! The easy thing about canning apple sauce is that you can use the inversion method. After filling your jars, simply flip the jars upside down & they should be sealed in only a few minutes! This method only works when the apple sauce is very hot, so be aware of this.
What you’ll need:
6 pounds of apples, about 30 medium sized apples
3/4 cup of water
4 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup (or leave out entirely)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Steps:
Peel, core & chop apples into chunks. Place in a large pot & add water & lemon juice.
Keep on medium-high heat & stir occasionally until apples break down & become soft. This may take about 30 minutes. One soft, pulse with an immersion blender until smooth.
Stir in cinnamon & sugar. Heat to boiling & let boil until thickened slightly, for about 3 minutes.
Serve immediately or transfer to mason jars to can for winter.
If you decide to can, simple pour HOT apple sauce into mason jars, seal, & flip them upside down to seal them completely. You will know they are sealed when you can no longer push down on the cap! Store for 6 months when canned.
